Wang Xuetao (1903-1982)
Originally called Tingjun, styled Xiaofeng and Chiyuan, a native of Cheng`an, Hebei Province, is a modern famous flower-bird painter. He was good at freehand brushwork in flower-bird painting. In 1918 he studied in the Department of Painting and Handicraft of Baoding Zhili Normal College. After he graduated in 1921, he served as a painting teacher of Dingzhou Normal School, and in the next year he studied Western painting in the Special Department of Beijing National School of Fine Arts and learned traditional Chinese painting under Chen Shizeng (1876-1923) and Chen Banding (1877-1970). In 1924 he became a student of Qi Baishi. Qi Baishi highly praised his artistic talents and gave him a new name- Xuetao. In 1926 he graduated and remained at the school to teach. At the same time, he served as a teacher of Jinghua School of fine Arts and Beiping School of Fine Arts. In the `30s, he learned to paint flowers and birds under Wang Mengbai and studied the works of Ba Da and Hua Yan . After the July 7 th Incident, the Japanese invading army occupied Beijing. Wang Xuetao firmly resigned his position as teacher and made a living by selling paintings and teaching apprentices, showing his lofty national dignity. After 1949, he painted and taught in the Beijing Studio of Painting/ A close observer of nature, Wang Xuetao's mature style is able to breathe life into even the most ordinary of subjects. He painted all kinds of plants, flowers, birds, fish and insects, and his paintings possess a vitality and richness of colour which have made them very popular. Wang Xuetao was president of Beijing Painting Studio and a member of the Standing Council of the Chinese Artists' Association and Chairman of the Beijing Society for the Study of Flower-and-Bird Painting. He died on November 24, 1982 in Beijing.
Wang Xue-tao was one of the greatest Chinese brush painters in 20th century. He is famous for his flower-bird painting. He not only followed traditional techniques, but also developed his own style of free flowing brush work.

He liked to use small subjects in his paintings, but whatever he drew, he captured the essence of the subject in a brilliant composition. He was an advocate of "blending one feelings into Nature". He won favourable comments from critics of numerous exhibitions. Before his death, he was a member of the Federation of Chinese Artists and the Director of Beijing Art Gallery.
Né à Cheng'an, province de Hebei, il s'intéressa aux esquisses-concepts miniatures, et particulièrement, à la représentation de fleurs, d'insectes et d'oiseaux. Dans ses dessins, il aima croquer des sujets de petite taille dont, peu importe la nature, il rendit toujours l'essence grâce à de brillantes compositions. Il prôna « le mariage de la nature et des émotions de l'artiste ». Les critiques de nombreuses expositions lui furent élogieuses. Membre de la Fédération des artistes chinois, il fut aussi directeur de la Galerie d'art de Beijing.
