Magnolia Tree Oil Painting on Canvas by Modern Chinese Master Professor Wang Ji-Yuan (1893-1975)

Wang Chi-Yuan was born in China in 1893 in Jiangsu. He was graduated from the Second Higher Education Teaching Institute of Jiangsu in 1912. In 1920, he joined the "Tien Ma Society" of Jiangsu, an organization to promote western style painting. After establishing himself as a painter, he headed the Faculty for Western Painting at the Shanghai College of Fine Arts. He also drafted texts for the Ministry of Education and published his own books on painting.

He has traveled widely throughout Europe and the Far East, and exhibited his paintings in many parts of the world. During the war in China, he worked in devastated areas, and contributed the money raised from exhibits of his paintings to the China Distress Relief Committee.

Wang Chi-Yuan has been living in the United States since 1941, first on the West Coast and then in New York, where he established the School of Chinese Brushwork. He teaches with the materials of Chinese water-ink painting and calligraphy because they are satisfying for the expression of Western thought. In 1950 Professor Wang was commissioned to paint the Car-nauba Palm mural for the Johnson Wax research building at Racine, Wisconsin, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

His work has been seen in private and museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the City Art Museum in St. Louis, the Chicago Art Institute, the Montreal Museum, the National Historical Museum in Taiwan, and the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno in Mexico. In 1964, Pitman published his book on Oriental Brushwork.

In 1970, the Smithsonian Institution created a traveling exhibit of his work, shared with his friend of 50 years, Chang Dai Chien.

Wang Chi-Yuan passed away in 1975 in United States.

現代畫家。祖籍安徽,生于江蘇武進。1912年江蘇第二高等師範學校華業后,曾到鄉間小學教美術,并從事書畫藝術。1920年于上海參加西洋畫社團“天馬會”,后任上海美術專科學校教授。1928年赴日本東京、法國巴黎考察西洋美術。1941年又赴美國,創辦華美畫學院,傳授中國畫和書法。善中西繪畫,以水彩畫見長,多取材于風景。西畫風格受塞尚影響,又具東方藝術氣質。國畫重寫生,墨色淋漓,自具風貌。傳世作品有《朝暾》、《甘露池》等,圖錄于1933年《藝苑》第一輯。早年編有高中水彩畫教本,并有《濟遠水彩畫集》等。
