We have arrived at the steep mountain pass at Nissaka, seen in the distance in the previous print. Here the travelers face a stiff and steep uphill climb. The boulder on the road at the bottom is the "weeping stone", a rock that the Goddess of Mercy Kannon caused to cry out when a pregnant woman was murdered here by a bandit. A priest passing by heard the cry and managed to save the woman's baby, though not the mother. The site is considered sacred.
