The trees lining the Tokaido Road had the function of shading passengers and protecting them somewhat from sun wind and rain, as well as guiding them safely along the road at dusk. In this charming scene, Hiroshige shows how the trees could have the effect of enclosing the travelers on the road, here producing a kind of tunnel though which the colorful group pass.
