Hiroshige follows his natural masterpiece at Hakone with one of the human masterpieces of the series, the bearers in the morning mist at Mishima, the site of a famous shrine. The travelers on the palanquin and horse seem still to be sleeping in the early morning, as the bearers push on into the new day. The wonder of this print is a product of the carvers and printers, who give the shrine gate and background details in misty shadows that give the print its unusual atmoshpere.
