At Odawara, travelers face for the first time one of the many river fords on the Tokaido Road. Those with the funds could hire a bearer to carry them across on shoulders or palanquin, but the average man had to walk, sometimes a precarious undertaking. Hiroshige opens us up to the broad expanse of nature in this piece, after the closure of most of the village stations.
