Take a trip along the old Tokaido Road with Hiroshige at my auctions this week. I have recently acquired a complete set of all 55 prints from Hiroshige's great series of landscapes of Edo Period Japan, and am offering them individually at my auctions this week at a low starting price. These are genuine woodblock prints of Hiroshige's work, printed in the early-mid part of the last century (20th century/1930s?) Each measures about 5 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches and the condition on most is perfect, any exceptions noted. The carving and printing of these woodblocks is of incredible quality, at a level that today's craftsmen are no longer able to achieve. Enjoy the prints and the scenes at my auctions, and hopefully you'll be able to pick one up at a reasonable price too.
The Tokaido journey for the denizen of Edo began at Nihonbashi, the center of Japan from which all points were measured for distance. Hiroshige presents the barrel bridge in the early morning, with a procession crossing as workingmen and dogs flee.
