Deng Erya (1884-1955)
Biographical Notes
A native of Dongguan, Guangdong. Deng studied in Japan in 1905 and later resided in Guangzhou. He taught at various public and private schools. In 1922, he moved to Hong Kong and founded the Chinese Painting Research Society, Hong Kong Branch with Huang Binhong in 1926. His publications include "The Origin of Words", "Poems of deng Zhai" and "Collection of Poems of the Green Brocade Studio", etc.
Deng Erya excelled in poetry, Chinese classics and calligraphy, and was particularly noted for writing seal script. Occassionally he also painted landscapes. Deng was also a renowned seal carver.

Deng Erya's works were widely exhibited in China and Hong Kong. His works were featured in joint exhibitions including 'The First Guangdong Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition '(1921), 'Modern Chinese painting' (Berlin, Germany '1933), 'Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Taiyilou Collection' (Hong Kong Museum of Art '1991), 'Chinese Painting and Calligraphy by Guangdong and Hong Kong Artists from the taiyilou Collection' (Hong Kong Museum of Art '1992) etc.
鄧爾疋(1884-1954)
原名溥,後改名萬歲,字季雨,號爾雅,以號行,別署寵恩,廣東東莞人,出生於北京。是掌教廣雅書院的光緒翰林鄧鏡蓉(蓮裳)第四子。生於江西,幼承家學,八歲學寫篆書,兼研小學與篆刻。旋回粵,得見黃牧甫(士陵)篆刻,極為欽佩,由是專心治印。嘗說:「書從印入,印從書出。」可見其對書法與印章融會貫通之體會。1905年留學日本,專攻文學。1906年與潘達微等主辦《時事畫報》、《賞奇畫報》,1907年回國任小學教員,定居廣州。1912年與黃節、陳樹人、蔡守、王秋湄等創辦貞社廣州分社,1914年參加南社,1920年與李研山等創辦廣州三餘印社。1922年移居香港。1926年在香港參與廣東國畫研究會香港分會、藝觀學會和南社書畫會,提倡傳統書畫。鄧氏畢生努力鑽研金石、書法,於古器中殘字、奇字、別字,考據精詳。餘事繪畫、作詩、填詞,楚楚有致。家藏文物頗富,尤以明末鄺湛若(露)綠綺臺琴,最為珍貴。鄧氏因此在新界大埔築“綠綺園”作居所以奉琴。甥容庚(1894-1983)精研古器,婿黃般若(1901-1968)賞鑑古畫,平日互相切磋,頗有發明。
鄧氏的書法,無論篆隸行楷,都給人以整潔圓靜的美感。行楷受鄧承脩影響,瘦逸遒勁而腴潤大度,別饒韻致。篆書功力深厚,用筆如挽強弓,斬釘截鐵,渾厚剛勁,力抵千鈞。結構嚴整中有奇變,運筆矯若遊龍,幻化莫測。形成一種古雅新穎的獨特風格,別樹一幟。篆刻師法秦漢,兼以六朝造像等形像入印,對鄧石如、黃士陵兩家,亦能融會貫通,為一代名家。鄧氏並精詩文,對古文字的考據,有深刻的研究。鄧氏居於香港三十餘年,作育不少英才,於提倡傳統書畫藝術,不遺餘力,對近代香港和廣東的書法篆刻藝術有相當大的影響。鄧氏著有《文字源泉》、《綠綺園詩集》、《鄧齋印譜》、《集唐宋詩聯》、《鄧齋筆記》、《藝觚草稿》和《聊齋索引》等。其中以《文字源泉》,洋洋四十餘萬字,畢生精力,盡粹於斯。
