Biographical Notes

A native of Maoming, Guangdong, Ding studied painting at the Tokyo College of Fine Arts form 1919 to 1925. He retured to China in 1925 and taught western painting at various art colleges. jIn 1949, he settled in Hong Kong. In 1958, he was invited in planning the establishment of the Department of Fine Arts, New Asia College. Later her served as a lecturer at the Department of Fine Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Ding Yanyong devoted to oil painting in his early years and had been influenced by Matisse, post-impressionism, cubism and fausism. He later turned to Chinese painting. Inspired by the styles of Bada Shanren and Monk Shitao, he successfully assimilated Chinese and western painting styles to develope his own. Ding excelled in oil painting and Chinese painting, and was particularly fond of painting landscapes, figures, flowers, birds, animals, fish and insects. He was also noted seal carving and calligraphy.

Ding Yanyong's works were widely exhibited in Hong Kong and overseas. His works were features in solo exhibitions held in Hong Kong (1957.1963.1973), Australia (1975), Taiwan, (1977) and in exhibitions including 'Works by Ding Yanyong' (Taipei. 1979), 'Restrospective of Ding Yanyong' (Hong Kong Arts Centre.1979), etc. His works were also featured in joint exhibitions including the ' Central Arts Exibition, Japan' (Tokyo.1924), the 'First National Fine Arts Exhibition' (Shanghai.1929), 'Modern Chinese Painting' (Musee Cernuschu, France.1946), a travelling exhibition in U.S.A (1959), the Contemporary Chinese Painting Exhibition' (University of Melbourne, Australia.1974) the 'XIV and XVIII Annual Exhibitions ofthe Nanga Society' (Japan 1974.1978), etc.

Award

Ding Yanyong was granted the tablet with the inscription Qiyue Minzhi (Opening up the People's Wisdom) on it by the Nationalist Government, China.

丁衍庸(1902-1978

生於廣東,在東京美術學校習畫,受野獸派風格的影響甚深。1925年回到中國展開教學生涯。1949年遷居香港。晚年致力於中國畫,並且經營出一種自然的表現主義風格。並將古典的篆刻趣味帶進它的繪畫作品中。

丁衍庸是現代著名畫家、篆刻家。中西畫皆精,有“東方馬蒂斯”之稱。他字叔旦,號肖虎,丁虎,廣東茂名人。生於1902年卒於1978年。丁衍庸1918年中學畢業後獲公費赴日留學,翌年考入東京美術學校。1925年畢業返國,任立達學院美術科、神州女子學校藝術科西畫教授。同時與蔡元培、陳抱一創辦中華藝術大學,任教務長、教育系主任,並同陳抱一負責西畫科。1928年返廣州,任博物館藝術部主任、美術學校教授。抗日戰爭期間任教于重慶藝術專科學校。1946年任廣東藝術專科學校校長。1949年移居香港,改名丁鴻,先後任教於德明書院、珠海、香江、諸聖堂等校。  

藝術特色

丁衍庸擅長西畫,油畫作品功力深厚,人體素描基礎深厚,宗野獸派大師馬蒂斯。作品色彩絢豔,線條簡練。 他兼善中國畫,花鳥畫擷取朱耷、徐渭、金農的特點。畫面新穎、活躍、純真、自成一格;山水畫筆觸明快豪放,佈局革新,留白巧妙,意境深遠;人物畫也饒有情趣。書法工草書,筆勢賓士。他曾作有油畫《食桌之上》、《休息》、《讀書之女》;中國畫有《荷蛙圖》、《花鳥》、《鍾馗捉妖》、《群仙祝壽》三連屏、《水仙》等;書法有《草書對聯》等。著有《中西畫的調和者高劍父先生》、《中國繪畫及西洋繪畫的發展》、《八大山人與現代藝術》等。1973年香港運元出版社出版《丁衍庸畫集--巴黎大學畫展作品選》;同年香港三一出版社出版《丁衍庸畫集》;1976年日本春秋書道院出版《丁衍庸詩書畫篆刻集》等。

作品行情變化

丁衍庸作品近年來最受香港和東南亞人士看重,儘管現在作品價格不算很高,但增幅速度卻很大,大約15年來增長150倍。最初70年代畫作只能賣100多港元,現在則賣到五、六萬港元。

1986年丁衍庸作品的市場已基本固定下來,當年出售的一幅《鍾馗》立軸已達到5.8萬港元,一本八幅冊頁也賣到1.4萬港元。以後作品增幅不大,原因一是作品出售太多,許多持有作品的廣東人輕易就送到香港出售,二是港臺持有丁衍庸精品的收藏家不肯參與出售,一度精品難見,一般作品又很多,價格自然提高不了。

1987年出售的兩幅作品(包括一幅油畫)每幅還未賣到2萬港元。1989年價格也不高,一幅《花卉、魚、蝶》油畫賣到2.8萬港元,一幅國畫《服虎圖》賣到4.8萬港元。1990年價格未有多少提升,始終未達到 10萬港元大關。

進入1991年,丁衍庸作品價格有重大突破,4月拍賣的5幅作品中,一幅《仕女畫像》達到10萬港元,另一幅《畫家與裸女》達到20萬港元,這兩幅作品表現現代風格很濃,與西方現代繪畫從形式上較?接近。 90年代初,美國市場對丁衍庸作品開放。199011月一本十二開《雜冊》賣到8500美元。19915月《木蘭從軍》僅賣到1200美元,價格還是比較低的。
