Guan Liang (1900-1986)
zhi Liang Gong. A native of Panyu of Guangdong. He studied western style painting at the Pacific Arts School in Tokyo, Japan. He returned to China in 1922. Then he taught art at various arts schools in Shanghai including as Professor of the Department of Fine Arts in Shanghai Arts University. He also joined the Oriental Arts Study Society. He held his first solo exhibition in 1924 and had won great fame. Then he took up the role as the arts editor of "Creation House", a radical literature organization, and had drawn many illustrations for their publications. In 1926, he went to Guangzhou and took up the job as a professor in Guangzhou Arts Institute. He quit his job when the Sino-Japanese war broke out in 1930's. He started his trip to North-western China to study the arts of the grottoes. He also started to make his living by selling his paintings. After the war, he returned to his arts teaching profession and he had been a professional painter in Shanghai Painting School and Professor in Zhejiang Fine Arts Academy.
Guan was strongly influenced by Japanese art of the early 20th century rather than the fashionable European styles of the day. He was famous in drawing traditional opera figures. His works, such as lady (shi nu), ooze oriental flavor and are easily distinguishable from those of his Western-educated peers.
關良 (1900一1986)
字良公，廣東番禺人。早年赴日本東京太平洋美術學校留學，跟中村不折學習西洋畫， 喜愛凡高與高更的繪畫風格，1922年歸國到上海，擔任上海神州女學、上海美專、上海藝術大學美術系教授，參與“東方藝術研究會”的創辦工作。1924年在上海寧波同鄉會舉辦畫展，名聲鵲起，被郭沫若、郁達夫等激進作家組成的著名文學團體“創造社”聘為美術編輯，經常為該社出版物畫插圖及設計封面。1926年回到故鄉廣州，擔任廣州美術學校教授， 北伐時期擔任政治部藝術股長。抗日戰爭爆發后他辭去公職，長途跋涉去西北諸地考察石窟藝術，沿途賣畫為生。建國后歷任上海中國畫院畫師、浙江美術學院教授。
關良的繪畫最初專習西洋畫，后轉向用水墨畫戲劇人物。為領悟戲劇人物的一招一式，他曾參加招收學員的京戲班子，認真學習京劇表演藝術，體會各種角色的情趣、身段、手勢，溶于戲劇人物繪畫之中。1942年他在成都舉辦的個人畫展，引起美術界很大反響， 郭沫若觀賞關良的戲劇人物畫后，認為是古今奇作，并撰文《關良藝術論》向社會介紹和贊揚他的繪畫藝術。1956年文化部在北京舉辦《關良個人畫展》，數天之中觀眾如潮。第二年民主德國邀請關良在東柏林舉辦個人畫展。關良的畫作品進入海外藝術市場較早，頗受歐美藏家的青睞，價格也大大高于國內市場。
