Yamamoto Shunkyo (1871 - 1933)
Born in Shiga-ken in 1871 and lived in Kyoto. He was a pupil of Kōno Bairei, Nomura Bunkyo and Mori Kansai. During the 1890's he became known as a new talent by his participation in various exhibitions.
In 1899 he became a teacher at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts. His Western style dress and his success as an artist made him a popular teacher. He was one of the first of the Nihonga artists who were interested in Western art and in photography as an art form. From both he learned about perspective and about the rendering of light and atmosphere.
He was a professor at the Kyoto College of Fine Arts and one of the founders of the modern Kyoto school.
He frequently exhibited at the Bunten and was a member of the Imperial Art Committee and of the Teikoku Bijutsuin. In 1904 he participated in the St Louis Exposition, as a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. His painting Snow on the Rockies (1905) is one of the first examples of his unique, personal style, which was characterised by a kind of realism that was the result of a fusion of Western realism and Japanese shasei (sketching from nature), without ever becoming mechanical. Especially in his later years he emphasized the spiritual aspect of art.
