Yuan Ji (Shi Tao) (1642-1707)

A kinsman of emperor of the Ming Dynasty. His sobriquet was Balsam Pear Monk. His father who named Zhu Kengjia rebelled in GuangXi province, later was captured and was killed.From then on, he became a monk and made a living on selling his paintings. After studying the style of Song Yuan Dynasty and referring to the style of Shen Zhou (1427-1509) and Dong Qichang (1555-1636),his paintings executed free and unstained strokes with ingenious composition. He advocated that one painter should have his own style, should have lots of experience of traveling, should follow the fashion of painting technique.He was also know as one of the Four Great Masters of Monk in the Early Qing Dynasty, which referred to four painters in the early Qing Dynasty:Shi Tao,Zhu Da,Kun Can and Hong Ren. They are all famous monks.

原濟(1642一1718) 

清代書畫家,畫學理論家。僧人。俗姓朱,名若極,廣西全州人,明藩靖江王朱守謙后裔,父亨嘉于明亡后在桂林自稱“監國”為南明廣西巡撫瞿式耜所殺,時若極僅五歲,削髮為僧,得以存活,法名原濟,一作元濟 (后人傳為“道濟”,乃尊稱,非名字,實誤),小字阿長,字石濤,號大滌子、清湘陳人、清湘遺人,晚號瞎尊者、零丁老人等,自稱苦瓜和尚。曾拜旅庵、本月為師,傳授佛學,雲游四方。早年喜山水,屢登廬山、黃山諸名勝,流寓宜城十年。與梅清、梅庚、戴本孝等交往,相互影響,合稱“黃山派”,中年與師兄喝濤住南京一枝閣,別號 “一枝叟”。 康熙二十九年(1690)應輔國將軍博爾都、大司農王騭之邀,到北京作客三年,晚年定居揚川,擅畫花果蘭竹,兼工人物,尤善山水,畫名極盛。其畫力主“搜盡奇峰打草稿”,一反當時仿古之風,構圖新奇,筆墨雄健縱恣,淋漓酣暢,深得元人意趣,在氣概與風神上自具獨特面目,于氣勢豪放中寓有靜穆氣氛,更為同時代諸家所不及,王原祁聽謂:“何大江以南,無出石師右者”書法工分,并擅詩文,幾乎每畫必題,時寓故國之痛,與弘仁、髡殘、朱耷合稱“清初四高僧”,對后來揚州畫派與近代畫風,影響極大,傳世作品有康熙十九年(1680)作《黃山八勝圖》冊(八頁),現藏日本神奈川縣墨友莊;二十九年作《詩畫冊》(八頁),藏廣州美術館:四十一年作《黃硯旅詩意圖》冊(三十二頁),圖錄于《石濤畫集》;《梅竹雙清圖》軸,藏上海博物館:《蕉菊圖》軸,藏故宮博物院;《淮陽洁秋圖》軸,藏南京博物婉,精釋、道、儒三教哲理,又深究畫理,并融匯自己創作實踐經驗,著有《畫譜錄》十八章(一名《畫譜》,為手寫刻本)。
