Su Liupeng (1791 - ca. 1862) or (1798-1875)
Together with another late Qing artist, Su Renshan, Su Liupeng (1791 – ca. 1862) is acclaimed as one of the "Two Sus". Renowned for his figure paintings, his subjects were mostly common people; his works reveal great empathy for the lower classes and also indicate that Guangdong painters were pioneers in portraying the victims of contemporary society. Su Liupeng also painted historical figures and legends. Su Liupeng uses thick outlines in typical, angular brushstrokes, while the realistic rendering of the facial features – which could almost have been taken from life – adds a strong presence to his figure paintings, bringing historical figures much closer to people's lives and times.
蘇六朋 (1791-1862), 或作 (1798-1875)
清代平民畫家。字枕琴,號怎道人、怎叔、南水村佬、南水村老、羅浮道人、羅浮樵子、南水漁郎、南溪漁隱、溪山樵子、雲裳道人、石樓吟叟、第七洞天樵子、七十二洞天散人、四百三十二峰散人等,室名枕琴廬、石亭池館、畢竟如是軒等。印章上用蘇六朋、蘇子朋、枕琴、枕琴書畫、溪山樵子、雲裳道人、無閑緣等。廣東順德勒流南水鄉人。十多歲時到羅浮山寶積寺讀書,跟隨德坤和尚學畫,學成後,在廣州城隍廟擺攤賣畫養家。中年時名氣漸響,便開設畫室“石亭池館”和“柳塘吟館”賣畫兼授徒。傳世作品有道光二十四年(1844)作《太白醉酒圖》軸,現藏於上海博物館; 二十五年作《漁樂圖》軸,圖錄于《廣東名畫家選集》; 咸豐六年(1858)作《東山報捷圖》軸,現藏於廣州美術館; 此外還有《蘇武牧羊圖》、《卻美圖》、《清平調圖》、《達摩圖》、《竹林七賢圖》等。
蘇六朋師承黃慎等,宗法宋元以來諸家,畫風有工有粗,山水、花鳥、人物均很有造詣,在繪畫藝術上可說得全能。又兼擅指頭畫。其中以寫人物最著名。他畫人物造型準確,點劃精緻,筆墨雄健,神態生動,尤其是他畫的題材多取材於市井生活、道釋、仙人及民間故事,都是民眾喜聞樂見的事物,比如《和合二仙》、《福祿壽三星》等等,很得平民百姓的喜愛。當時不少茶樓酒館都喜歡張掛他的畫作。各處鄉村祠堂也聘請他畫幾張作收藏,作為太公產業,逢有慶典就拿出來讓族人觀賞。可見他的作品在社會上廣被接納、大受歡迎。
不過,最令人稱道的是,他是一位富有正義感的畫家,一生對黑暗社會現實深懷不滿,為此,他專門創作了不少寓意深刻,針對時弊而形象詼諧的諷刺畫。這些作品,開創了近代漫畫創作的先河。深受有識之士和民眾的歡迎。其代表作就是在中國美術史,特別是漫畫史上具里程碑意義的《通寶圖》。他將芸芸眾生對金錢的各種醜陋心態以誇張幽默的手法淋漓盡致地表現出來,在眾多畫家仍沉湎在紅袖添香,訪戴夜歸的傳統情趣中時,他已將敏銳的視角伸進人性陰暗面,並以自己傑出的技法表現出來。所以蘇六朋堪稱廣東漫畫之父。
蘇六朋自己能繪畫,連他的妻子也能作人物畫。他的兒子蘇騰蛟、蘇子鳴,孫兒蘇逢聖都是些有水平的畫家,可算得是一個藝術家庭。
