Dong Qichang (1555-1636)

A native of Songjiang, Shanghai City. His style name was Xuan Zai and his sobriquets were Si Bai, etc. He was a high official. Following the style of Dong Yuan, Ju Ran, Huang Gongwang and Ni Zan, his landscapes paintings executed elegant and refined with ancient atmosphere. He was the leader of the "Hua Ting school literati". After studying the style of Two Wang, he fully demonstrated his preeminent talent for his calligraphy. He advocated the Literary Painting and gave considerable influence to later painters. His works were included in "Essay about Painting Written in HuaChan Studio", etc.

(明)字玄宰,號思白,華亭(今上海市松江)人,一作上海人(上海在唐為華亭縣地,清屬松江府。華亭、云閒、松江、上海、婁縣俱為一地)。萬曆十六年(1588)進士,選庶吉士授編修。官至禮部尚書。諡文敏。天才俊逸,善談名理,少好書、畫,臨摹真蹟,至忘寢食。行楷之妙,跨絕一代。同時以善書名者,臨邑邢侗、順天米萬鍾,晉江張瑞圖,時人謂邢張米董,又曰南董北米,然三人者不逮其昌遠甚。其昌自云: [吾學書,初師顏平原(真卿)多寶塔,又改學虞永興(世南),以為唐書不如晉、魏,遂倣黃庭經及鍾元常(繇)宣示表、力命表、還示帖,丙舍帖凡三年,自謂逼古,不復以文徵仲、祝希置之眼角。乃於書家之神理實未有入處,徒守格轍耳。比游嘉興,得盡項子京家藏真蹟,又見右軍(王羲之)官奴帖於金陵,方悟從前妄自標評,自此漸有小得。今將二十七年,猶作隨波逐浪,書家翰墨小道,其難如是。] 又云: [余書與趙文敏(孟頫)較,各有短長。行間茂密,千字一同,吾不如趙,若臨倣歷代,趙得其十一,吾得其十七。又趙書因熟得俗態,吾書因生得高色,吾書往往率意,當吾作意,趙書亦輸一籌,第作意者少耳。] 畫山水少學黃公望,中復去而宗董源、巨然,復集宋、元諸家之長,行以己意。氣韻秀潤,瀟灑生動,尤與米、高為近。因其曾祖母乃高克恭之雲孫女,淵源有自,故精於用墨。其昌又云: [余畫與文太史(徵明)較,各有短長。文之精工具體,吾所不如,至於古雅秀潤更進一籌矣] 所惜筆力柔媚,結構松懈,邱壑平庸,樹木支離。對於清代三百年畫壇有極大影響,其昌最矜慎其畫,貴人巨公,鄭重請乞者,多倩他人應之,或點染已就,僮奴以贗筆相易,亦欣然為題署,都不計也,家多姬侍,各具絹素索畫,稍有倦色,則謠諑繼之,購其真蹟者,得之閨房者為多。清代康熙、乾隆俱喜其書、畫,因之全國靡然從風。著畫禪室隨筆,畫旨,畫眼、容臺集。卒年八十二。傳世遺蹟頗多,印本亦夥。
