Biographical Notes
A native of Guangdong, Zhou graduated from the Shanghai University of Art. In 1937, he founded the Kowloon College of Fine Arts and later founded the Gongli College of Fine Arts. He also lectured at the Department of Fine Arts, Bangkok University, Thailand.
Zhou Gongli studied oil painting from a Russian painter and figure painting from Li Tiefu. He also studied Chinese painting from Wu Changshuo. Zhou excelled in oil painting, watercolour and Chinese ink painting, and was particularly noted for painting nudes, landscapes, figures, flowers and birds.
Selected Exhibition Records
Zhou Gongli's works were widely exhibited in Hong Kong and overseas. His works were featured in the solo exhibition 'Exhibition in Relief for the Yellow River Flooding' (Society of Chinese Calligraphy, Painting and Literature, Hong Kong 1930). Other solo exhibi-tions were held at the St. John's Cathedral, Hong Kong (1934 1964), Bangkok, Thailand (1963), City Hall, Hong Kong (1964), Montreal, Canada (1981), etc. His works were also featured in joint exhibitions in Japan (1928), the 'French Salon' (France 1928), Works by Zhou Gongli and students (St. John's Cathedral, Hong Kong 1934), Anti-war exhibition (Guilin, Guangxi, China 1942), 'Hong Kong Artists the Early Generation' (Hong Kong Museum ofArt 1978), 'Contemporary Chinese Ink Painting and Calligraphy' (Hong Kong 1978), 'Chinese Painting and Calligraphy by Guangdong and Hong Kong Artists from the Taiyi lou Collection' (Hong Kong Museum of Art 1992), etc.

生平略歷
原藉廣東梅縣，生於廣西賓陽。自幼喜好美術，及長，入廣州市立美術專科學校，後轉入上海藝術大學藝術糸，課餘師從李鐵夫及俄藉畫家普特魯斯基進修油畫人像，並跟隨吳昌碩研習國畫。畢業後獲廣西省公費留學日本、法國。回國後，曾在北京、上海等地講學並舉辦畫展。1932年在香港創立“九龍美術專科學校”。後參加抗日救亡運動，繼歐陽予倩出任廣西省藝術館館長。戰後，回港設立“公理美術學院”。1963年應邀赴泰國曼谷大學美術系講學。1979年應邀出席加拿大滿地可國際藝術節講學及舉辨畫展。 1982年在香港大會堂舉辨慈善畫展。1983年4月應邀在美國加州大學講學並舉辨個人畫展，同年7月加拿大滿地“中國文化促進會”為其舉辨個人畫展。周公理擅繪山水、人物、花鳥，中西兼取，行筆流暢，水墨交融，生意郁勃，富個人風貌。亦擅油畫、水彩畫，好畫裸女。作品為國內外多處博物館、藝術館收藏。與吳雲峰合著《中國畫技法》在加拿大《華僑時報》連載。
展覽資枓
周公理早期作品曾入選在法國、日本舉辨的大型畫展。其作品亦曾於香港及海外多次展出。個展包括「救濟黃河水災個展」(香港書畫文學社.1930)、香港聖約翰教堂個展(1934-1964)、泰國曼谷個展(1963)、香港大會堂個展(1964)、加拿大滿地可個展(1981)。聯展包括日本聯展(1928)、法國沙龍畫展(1928)、師生聯展(香港聖約翰教堂.1934)、「抗戰畫展」(廣西桂林.1942)、「香港前輩藝術家作品」展 (香港藝術館.1978)、「中國近代名家水墨」展(香港.1978)、「太乙樓藏廣東、香港名家書畫」展 (香港藝術館.1992) 等。
